Lord Chesterfield
|
|
(Philip Stanhope, 4th earl of Chesterfield, 1694–1773) Politician and author, now remembered largely through Dr Johnson's abuse of him. His unfulfilled promises provoked Johnson's famous attack on *patrons; and his Letters to his Son (private letters to the boy, with advice on all aspects of behaviour in polite society, published in 1774 after both father and son were dead) were dismissed with the Johnsonian comment that they taught 'the morals of a whore and the manners of a dancing master'.
