(72,000 in 1991) Ancient industrial town in Derbyshire, where lead was mined in Roman times, widely known now for the crooked spire of the 14C parish church of St Mary and All Saints. Beneath a lead covering it is constructed of timber, which has warped and twisted to bring the top 2.4m/8ft out of the vertical.
