(21km/13m E of Newport) Town in Gwent on the river Wye, with a very early Norman castle straddling a rocky bluff above a curve in the river. The central 2-storey tower was built in about 1070 by William FitzOsbern, one of William the Conqueror's closest circle of friends. Unusually for the time, he built in stone rather than wood. Much enlarged in the 13C, the castle is now a ruin.
