|
(London SW3) The third oldest *botanic garden in the country, founded in 1673 by one of the *City Livery Companies, the Apothecaries' Society, for purposes of teaching and research. In 1681 the Society installed Britain's first heated greenhouse (visited and much admired by John Evelyn in 1684). Hans *Sloane acquired the garden in 1712, linking it with the Royal Society and greatly enhancing its use both to botany and medicine.
