Chelsea Arts Club
|
|
(London SW3) A *club founded in 1891 by a group of artists – including *Whistler, who had been instrumental in *Chelsea becoming a district associated with painters. The club moved in 1902 to its present premises in Old Church Street, adapted from two 18C cottages with a large garden. It was best known to the outside world through the famous Chelsea Arts Ball. With magnificent costumes and elaborate decorations by London art students, the ball was held from 1910 at the Albert Hall – until 1921 on Shrove Tuesday and then on New Year's Eve. But the annual event became so rowdy that after 1958 it was discontinued (there was an October revival of it at the Albert Hall in 1992). In the 1960s members other than practising artists were for the first time admitted to the club.
