(26km/16m NW of Tunbridge Wells) Home of Winston *Churchill from 1922 till his death. A redbrick Victorian house was remodelled for him by the architect Philip Tilden (1887–1956). Some of the rooms are kept now as he lived in them, including the study where he wrote his books; others are a museum of memorabilia, with cigar boxes, wide-brimmed hats, his wartime *siren suits (several of them in in velvet) and many of his paintings. The gardens contain long stretches of wall that he built himself (one of his more unusual hobbies) and the studio in which he painted. On the lake are descendants of his black swans, originally a gift from Australia.
