Chamberlain's Men
|
|
The leading company of actors in the late Elizabethan and Jacobean period. Both *Shakespeare and *Burbage were prominent members from 1594, the year in which the *lord chamberlain provided his patronage, and Shakespeare wrote nearly all his plays for the company. They were based at the *Globe from 1599; from about 1608 they also had a covered theatre at Blackfriars for winter performances. On his accession in 1603 James I took them under his personal protection, and from then on they were known as the King's Men.
