(1563–1612, kt 1591, earl of Salisbury 1605) Chief minister to Elizabeth I after the death of his father, Lord *Burghley, in whose footsteps he followed precisely (a legal training, a seat as an MP and then royal service). He was appointed secretary of state in 1596 and James I kept him in the same position when he came to the throne in 1603, making him lord treasurer in 1608. His elder brother inherited Burghley House and he built *Hatfield House, in which his descendants still live.
