Castle Ward
|
|
(48km/30m SE of Belfast House built in the 1760s, famous for the clash of architectural styles which resulted from the differing tastes of Bernard Ward and his wife, Lady Anne. He preferred the classical style, while she was an early enthusiast for the *Gothic Revival. They split their house down the middle, the façades and interiors on either side being flamboyant examples of the rival orthodoxies. The marriage did not long survive this disagreement, Lady Anne retreating to spend the rest of her days, surprisingly, in the ultra-classical city of Bath.
