Castell Coch
|
|
(8km/5m NW of Cardiff) Gothic Revival castle built by William *Burges for the 3rd marquess of Bute on the foundations of a ruined 13C fortress (the name means the 'red castle' in Welsh). It was begun in 1875 and completed in 1891, after Burges's death. In spite of the drawbridge and arrow slits, the new castle was intended (but rarely used) for comfortable Victorian entertaining in Burges's highly decorated interiors.
