(23,000 in 1991) Seaside town north of Belfast, on the inlet of the North Channel known as Belfast Lough. Its Norman castle is one of the best preserved in Ireland. Founded in about 1180 on a rock above the harbour, its square 5-storey keep now houses a museum.
