Caractacus
|
|
or Caratacus (1st century AD) The Latin name for the Celtic chieftain Caradoc, who was son of the *Cymbeline of Shakespeare's play. When the *Romans invaded in AD 43, Caradoc led the resistance; but defeat in the southeast drove him back to Wales, where he was again defeated and finally captured. The emperor Claudius displayed him and his family in a triumphal procession in Rome, where they so impressed the onlookers by their dignity that they were allowed to live in honourable captivity in the capital.
