Heathland plateau between Stafford and Lichfield. It was once a royal hunting preserve (since the time of the kings of Mercia), and there are still *deer – mainly fallow, but a few red. Originally an oak forest, most of the woodland was cleared in past centuries to provide fuel for the extensive local industries.
