Calke Abbey

(14km/9m S of Derby) A house little known until the 1980s, when it was acquired by the National Trust and received wide publicity as a place where time had stood still. It had been owned since the 17C by the Harpur-Crewes, a reclusive family reluctant to throw anything away. Their jumble of accumulated objects, from carriages to natural history collections, included even a superb state bed, delivered to the house in 1734 and in pristine condition because it had not been unpacked. The house, half concealed in a romantic park, dates mainly from 1701–4.
