Calcutta Cup
|
|
Trophy played for annually between the *rugby union teams of Scotland and England. It has an unusual and romantic origin. Some old boys of Rugby school formed a club to play football in Calcutta in the 1870s. Closing it down for lack of support a few years later, they spent their remaining funds on an exotic Indian tankard with three snake handles and an elephant on the lid (made, it is said, from the actual silver rupees in the club's kitty). In 1878 they presented this cup for a contest between Scotland and England.
