|
|
(32km/20m W of Edinburgh) Windswept open hill, with views for miles around, which is one of Scotland's most important archaeological sites. It was a place of ritual importance for some 2500 years. Here *Stone Age man erected a ring of standing stones for religious purposes (contemporary with *Stonehenge and *Avebury, approximately 2500 to 1600 BC). In the early *Bronze Age these stones were either removed or incorporated within a great burial cairn built on the hill, which remained in use until the *Iron Age.
