(3km/2m N of Newport) Town in Gwent, on the river Usk. It was the site of the camp of the Roman 2nd Legion, established in the late 1st century AD. Their amphitheatre has been excavated, as have sections of the barracks. Finds from the area are on view in the Legionary Museum. The Romans called the place Isca (from the Usk), and its present name is a corruption of castra legionis, the camp of the legion. It also has a place in Arthurian legend, as one of the candidates for *Camelot.
