Cabinet War Rooms
|
|
(London SW1) Bomb-proof nerve centre for the conduct of World War II, built below the buildings of *Whitehall in 1938–9. There are about 70 rooms, of which the most important were opened to the public in 1984, furnished as when in use. They include the room where the war cabinet would meet during an air raid, the map room where information from every front was processed and coordinated, and the tiny bedroom in which *Churchill was occasionally persuaded to sleep.
