William Butterfield
|
|
(1814–1900) Architect of almost 100 churches, in whose work the twin themes of *Anglo-Catholicism and the *Gothic Revival came powerfully together, harking back to an earlier more theatrical tradition of Christianity. Butterfield was drawn to the polychrome Gothic of Italy, and his churches – most notably All Saints, Margaret Street, in London – are known for their almost garish patterns of coloured bricks and tiles. His secular work, such as Keble College in Oxford or Rugby School, is in the same style.
