Burns Night
|
|
(Jan. 25) Annual celebration held by Scots everywhere in the world to commemorate the birthday of Robert *Burns. The main dish is the *haggis ('Great Chieftain o' the Puddin-race' in Burns' phrase), which is whenever possible preceded into the room by someone playing the *bagpipes. The evening includes a succession of patriotic and elaborately humorous speeches, the recital of poems by Burns and the singing of *Auld Lang Syne.
