Fanny Burney
|
|
(1752–1840, m. Alexandre d'Arblay 1793) Novelist and author of extensive journals. She was the daughter of the music historian Charles Burney (1726–1814). Her first novel, a witty account of a young girl's entry into London society (Evelina 1778) was an immediate success, as was Fanny herself. She became part of the literary circle round Dr *Johnson and had a royal appointment at court. Both these worlds, and that of her French émigré husband, were described in detail in regular letters to her sister, Susan, which were later published as her journals.
