(34km/21m SW of Reading) Village noted for Stanley *Spencer's Sandham Memorial Chapel. The murals (1927–32) depict camp and hospital scenes in World War I, culminating in Spencer's favourite theme, a Resurrection, on the east wall. The chapel commemorates Lieutenant Henry Sandham (d. 1919) who had served, like Spencer, in Macedonia.
