Brut
|
|
or Brutus The founder of Britain and the man from whom the word 'Britain' derives, according to medieval legends gathered by *Geoffrey of Monmouth. Brut was believed to be the great-grandson of the Trojan prince Aeneas and to have conquered England with a Trojan army, overcoming the giants then living here who were led by Gogmagog (an amalgamation of *Gog and Magog). He was also held to be the founder of London, which therefore became known as Troynovant or new Troy.
