The most select apartment block in London, on the north side of Piccadilly. The house facing the entrance yard was built by William Chambers in 1771–4; it was adapted in 1802–3 as apartments, and at the same time two long ranges of chambers were added behind the house by Henry *Holland. Designed originally for bachelors, Albany retains something of the seclusion and severity of a university college – with the apartments giving off staircases to either side of a covered walkway. Its most distinguished residents, ranging from Byron to Edward Heath, have usually come from the arts and politics.
