(1627–91) Chemist and physicist best known for his statement of the relationship between volume and pressure in gases, called in Britain and the USA Boyle's Law (at a constant temperature the pressure of a gas varies inversely with its volume). He researched in many fields, with a rigour in his experimental methods which was advanced for his time, and he put forward an atomic theory of the nature of matter in The Sceptical Chymist (1661). He was a founder member of the *Royal Society.
