Bowood House

(27km/17m NE of Bath)
An 18C house with a beautiful south front, in the style of an orangery, by Robert *Adam. (An older and larger part of the house was demolished in 1955, except for one Adam room which was transferred to *Lloyd's of London.) Joseph *Priestley was employed as librarian here, and the laboratory where he discovered oxygen in 1774 is still shown. The park is considered one of the masterpieces of Capability *Brown.
