Stiff felt hat, usually black, with a domed crown and a narrow brim curving tightly upwards, said to be named after a London hatter, John Bowler. Introduced c.1850, it became in the 20C (and remained until the 1970s) the indispensable headgear for men working in the *City. Known in north America as a derby, it is familiar round the world as part of the costume of Charlie *Chaplin.
