(Alan Brooke, 1883–1963, KCB 1940, viscount 1946) Commander of the 2nd Army Corps at *Dunkirk. Subsequently, as chief of the Imperial General Staff (1941–6), he was Churchill's right-hand man in the conduct of most of World War II.
