Bournville
|
|
(7km/4m S of Birmingham) Garden suburb founded when the *Cadbury brothers moved their chocolate factory in 1879 to a rural site on which stood Bournbrook Cottage; ville was added to the name because the best chocolates then came from France. The Cadburys were Quakers with a conviction that social evils began with bad housing. The example of Bourneville, where the families had larger gardens than in the earlier experiment at *Saltaire, had great influence on the planning of suburban development.
