A favourite *pantomime subject, based on the story in The *Arabian Nights about a penniless small boy, Aladdin, who gets hold of a magic lamp. When he rubs it, genies appear (from jinni, the Arabic word for a demon); they help him to untold wealth, a vast palace, and the love of Badroulboudour, the sultan's daughter.
