The Book of Common Prayer

Order of service of the *Church of England, largely the work of Thomas *Cranmer. First published in 1549, and reissued in a more Protestant form in 1552, its final version dates from 1662. Cranmer's aim, in providing an English liturgy, was to strip away medieval accretions in the Roman Catholic rites and thus to return to the forms of early Christian worship. The beauty of his prose had a lasting effect on the English language and caused his Prayer Book to be much loved. There was considerable resistance when the church promoted in 1980 an Alternative Service Book in modern English.
