(139,000 in 1991) Metropolitan district in Greater Manchester which was an important wool town in the Middle Ages and from the 18C a major centre in the cotton-spinning industry. Hall-i'-th'-Wood (a fanciful but officially used spelling of Hall in the Wood) is a half-timber 15C mansion in which Samuel *Crompton invented the spinning mule. The Tonge Moor Textile Museum displays early spinning machinery. The town's Museum and Art Gallery, founded in 1890 but now in a building of 1939, has a wide-ranging collection from ancient Egypt to 20C English painting, with an emphasis on local and industrial history.
