St Aidan

(d. 651) Irish missionary who was instrumental in bringing Celtic Christianity to northeast England. He was a monk on *Iona until sent as bishop to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, with its main stronghold at Bamburgh. Aidan established a church and monastery on the nearby island of *Lindisfarne, from which he made long journeys inland to set up missionary outposts. His feast day is August 31.
