Bodiam Castle
|
|
(19km/12m N of Hastings) Castle of the late 14C, sitting square and proud in the middle of a stretch of artificial water that is more of a lake than a moat. Built rapidly as a protection against invasion from France, to the latest design and standards of comfort (no fewer than 28 lavatories were set in the walls, draining into the moat), the castle was in the event not needed and has remained unchanged and unspoilt in its exterior architecture.
