Victory by Henry V and a small English army over the French in the middle period of the *Hundred Years' War. As at *Crécy, lightly armed men with *longbows wreaked havoc among the French in their unwieldy armour – killing some 1500 knights and 4500 other men-at-arms, at the cost of relatively few English casualties. The battle's fame in Britain (like that of St *Crispin) derives largely from its treatment by Shakespeare in *Henry V. The modern French name of the village, about 50km/31m SE of Boulogne, is Azincourt.
