Blitz
|
|
The word used in English for the large-scale German bombing of London and other cities in *World War II. The first such raid was on London during the night of 7 September 1940; it was described in the Daily Express of September 9 as 'blitz bombing'. The source was blitzkrieg (lightning war), the term coined by the Germans for their devastatingly successful military technique of a sudden attack with massive force.
