Blighty
|
|
Nostalgic slang term for Britain, used particularly by soldiers abroad in World War I. It derives from a word picked up by the British in the 19C in India, where bilayit (Hindustani for a distant province) was a name for Europe. A magazine called Blighty, specializing in pin-ups and cartoons, used to be a favourite with the troops, particularly in wartime; it was published 1916–20 and 1939–58.
