Black Country
|
|
The region stretching from Wolverhampton almost to Birmingham, straddling the south Staffordshire coalfields. The name was first used in the 18C, when the rich coal and iron resources led to rapid industrialization and to pollution of the entire district by the black coal smoke from the factory chimneys. The Black Country Museum (at Dudley, 10km/6m S of Wolverhampton) has reassembled ancient buildings from the district and has revived early machinery to give visitors a working glimpse of the region's many manufacturing trades and crafts.
