Billy Bunter
|
|
Grossly fat bespectacled schoolboy in loud check trousers, created by Frank Richards (pen name of Charles Hamilton, 1876–1961). He made his first appearance in 1908 in the opening number of Magnet, a magazine which featured until 1940 a weekly story about Greyfriars School, where Bunter is the regular butt of a gang calling themselves the Famous Five. The driving force of the plot is usually Bunter's unscrupulous greed, leading almost inevitably to his own later cries of anguish – 'Yarooooh, you rotters! Oh crikey!'. Of his many illustrators, Charles Chapman became the best known.
