Billingsgate Market
|
|
(London EC3) Wharfs here, on the north bank of the Thames downstream from London Bridge, were in use from at least the 11C as markets for a wide range of commodities. From the 17C the Billingsgate wharf specialized in fish. It was famous also for bad language; to 'talk like a Billingsgate fishwife' became almost a national benchmark in these matters. The Renaissance-style building facing the river dates from 1874–7 (designed by Horace Jones), but the market itself was moved in 1982 to a new building on the Isle of Dogs.
