Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood
|
|
(London E2) Opened in 1872 as the Bethnal Green Museum, an outpost of the *Victoria and Albert Museum. The intention was to provide a general museum for the underprivileged *East End. Only gradually did the emphasis shift towards childhood. It was given its present name in 1974 and now has a major collection of toys, dolls, dolls' houses, games and children's books and costumes. One part of the museum is an airy metal structure originally put up in South Kensington, as part of the first temporary *Victoria and Albert Museum. It was moved here in 1872.
