Henry Bessemer
|
|
(1813–98, kt 1879) Versatile inventor with a pivotal role in the story of *iron and steel. His fame and fortune derived from the discovery that carbon can be removed from molten iron by blowing air through it – thus simplifying, in the technology of that time, the manufacture of steel. He perfected the Bessemer process during the years 1855–9, in time to benefit from the world-wide demand for steel caused by the spread of railways.
