Bertram Mills

Britain's best-known circus until its final season in the winter of 1966. It was established by the owner of a coach-building firm, Bertram Mills (1873–1938), after he had bet a friend that he could put on a better show than what was then available at *Olympia. From 1920 his circus was the regular Christmas show at Olympia, and from 1929 it also toured each year in a big top; it was continued after his death by his two sons, Cyril and Bernard. One of the most popular attractions was its famous clown, Coco (Nicolai Poliakoff, 1900–74).
