(London WC2) Ambitious development by Robert *Adam and his brothers in 1768–73 of a large area stretching from the Strand down to the river. They named it after themselves (adelphoi is Greek for 'brothers'). The main terrace of riverside houses, raised on arches, was demolished in 1936–8. Only a few of the original buildings of the Adelphi now survive in the streets behind.
