(1867–1931) Author whose best novels, notable for their detailed realism, are set in the *Five Towns of his own childhood and early youth (he was born in Hanley). His first success was Anna of the Five Towns (1902), followed by The Old Wives' Tale (1908) and by a series on the fortunes of the Clayhanger family which began with Clayhanger (1910).
