Joseph Bazalgette
|
|
(1819–91, kt 1874) Engineer whose great work was the sewers which discharge London's effluent into the Thames at a safe distance downstream. The project, which began in 1859, was given urgency by the *Great Stink of the previous year. Partly opened in 1865 and completed ten years later, Bazalgette's brick tunnels are still in good condition today. Part of the same undertaking was the *Embankment.
