(June–Sept. 1940) The first turning point of *World War II, in which the pilots of Britain's *Hurricanes and *Spitfires (known later as the *Few) denied the German Luftwaffe control of the air over the Channel and therefore made impossible Hitler's proposed invasion. In September the Germans changed to a new strategy of bombing British cities (the *Blitz).
