Battle Abbey
|
|
(8km/5m NW of Hastings) Benedictine abbey founded by William I to fulfil a vow made before the Battle of *Hastings. The altar of the abbey church was sited where his rival, Harold II, had fallen. There remain today the 14C gatehouse, standing in the market square of the small town of Battle, and the abbot's hall (rebuilt in the 16C and now part of a girls' school).
