bathing machine
|
|
An invention of the 18C to enable the fashionable to enter the sea discreetly when bathing in resorts such as *Brighton. The bather, fully clothed, was enclosed in a hut on four wheels which was then drawn by horses into the sea. He or she changed inside before opening the door at the far end to descend some steps, where a 'dipper' would be standing in the water to ensure the bather's safety.
