Barebones Parliament
|
|
Abusive nickname for the parliament appointed by Cromwell in July 1653 after he had dismissed the rump of the *Long Parliament. Mainly strict *Puritans (they had been chosen as 'God-fearing men'), they set about their business with more zeal than judgement. The nickname was based on that of a member, Praise-God Barbon (c.1596–1680), who in fact took little part. The parliament was dissolved in December 1653 and was replaced by the *Protectorate.
